But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever (1 Timothy 5:8).

Every Christian has a duty to perform in the family. The Bible says that if anyone fails to provide for his own, and especially his own household or family, he has denied the faith and such a person is worse than an unbeliever. The first point of call to a Christian is the household or family. It is not even the ministry as some may think. When a Christian fails in his first point of call which is the family; he has definitely failed woefully. We can find this in the life of Prophet Eli as a case study. God judged and found him guilty because of the failure of his household and not even the ministry (1 Samuel 3:13-14).

As Christian parents, God expects us to train, discipline and correct our children in the way of the Lord. It is very good that we perform our duty both physically and spiritually. We must not do one and neglect the other. No wonder Jesus Christ said in Matthew 4:4, “It is written, man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” The training and nurturing of the children in the household must be balanced both physically and spiritually. You do not just take care of their physical needs at the expense of their spiritual needs. God expects the training of children to be total and balanced in the home.

Moreover as a Christian parent, you must live by example, hence, you are expected to be a pace-setter and a role model for everyone in the family to follow and emulate. This is the reason why the Bible tells us about Joshua when he said, “And it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” In fact, Joshua simply led the children of Israel by setting an example for them to follow. This is what every Christian parent is expected to do likewise.

Daily Tip: God is counting on you, and your household is looking up to you. Therefore, lead by example and become a role model to your family. Shalom!

Golden Text: For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him (Genesis 18:19).
