But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness (2 Peter 1:5-6).

Godliness is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. It is highly expected that every Christian should of necessity have the fruit of godliness, and continue to grow therein. Godliness simply means the purity of the soul and spirit; having the fear of God which is the beginning of wisdom. It can also be referred to as the righteousness of the heart, which is being seen outwardly through the life of a Christian. It is important to know that Jesus Christ said in Matthew 7:16, “You will know them by their fruits…” Godliness is one of the natures and characteristics of God.

God wants us to be pure in our heart, soul and spirit; and this will reflect in our behavior, attitude, language, the way of our thinking and doing things. In fact, our lives must be disciplined and our speech seasoned to bless the lives of others. A Christian is from above and his life, character and speech must reflect the life from above. No wonder the Bible says in Matthew 5:16, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Godliness is a basic necessity for Christian’s growth and development.

As a Christian, God has called you into the life of godliness, righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. The life you live bears witness to the fact that you are a child of God. As a child of God, you are unique and special because the Spirit of God dwells richly in your life. The Word of God is your mirror, and you must learn to use it to check and balance your life daily. The Word of God says, “Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance” (Matthew 3:8). Without the fruit of godliness, there can never be growth and development of a Christian’s life and character.

Daily Tip: Every Christian is expected to bear the fruit of godliness which is the nature and character of God. Shalom!
