If anyone among you thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless (James 1:26).

As a Christian, one needs to guard his heart rightly by avoiding words that will pollute or contaminate the heart. The clause, “…but deceives his own heart,” simply means to believe a lie. A Christian should avoid making comments that are contrary to the will of God concerning himself. The Bible says in Proverbs 23:7, “For as he thinks in his heart, so he is. ‘Eat and drink!’ he says to you, but his heart is not with you.” In fact, a Christian should learn how to make positive confessions that will affect his heart positively and develop him spiritually.

In Mark 4:26-27, Jesus Christ says, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground, and should sleep by night and rise by day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he himself does not know how.” The seed here is referred to as the Word of God; while the ground is referred to as the heart of man. When you sown negative seed, it will grow and pollute the heart. But when you sow positive seed, it will grow and enrich or sanctify your heart. Every Christian should be very mindful of his words.

The heart of a Christian should be a fertile ground where the Word of God is sown to produce and bring forth bountiful harvest. That is why Jesus Christ says in Matthew 13:23, “But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundred fold, some sixty, some thirty.” A Christian’s heart should be fertile and fruitful; hence, it must not be dormant and unfruitful. Every Christian should learn to guard his heart and condition it for the kingdom’s fruitfulness and development.

Daily Tip: A Christian’s heart should be a fertile ground where the Word of God is expected to grow and develop into fruitfulness. Therefore, be fruitful! Shalom!
